How to StumbleUpon a Fractal yinYang in Java while avoiding the Digg nation

They almost look like they get along.

Yeah, it’s kinda like that.

I confess. I am an avid user of StumbleUpon, a content discovery site (or bookmarking site) that is dissimilar to the popular Digg or Reddit model. Digg recently went through a politically laced upheaval, causing many users to flee the site and shore up Reddit’s numbers. But that’s another story.

SU gives you a magic button that you configure to suit your tastes, however “sick monkey-like” be they. Press the button and you are delivered a fresh page with usually something you immediately find amusing or fascinating. The cool part about SU is that it delivers content to you that you would never click on – it’s difficult to search for some things that you don’t even know about. Generally it is awesome and I recommend you check it out forthwith, or better yet, wait until you have finished reading this post.

I told you all that to tell you this. I stumbled upon (get it!?) a site. These little gems are not flashy Digg headlines. Their awesomeness is understated, coming from some of the lesser traveled web sites. Where else will out learn about what a banana equivalent dose, l’esprit de l’escalier, and semantic saturation are? How will you listen to the smooth geeky sounds of Code Monkey? If you just saw those terms as links on a page, they probably wouldn’t generate much interest. This is SU’s win.

To end, you need to go to this url and stare at it for awhile. At first I thought it was nothing, and almost clicked next. Then it grabbed me and I had to figure out just how the hell the pattern was changing, because I saw high order in it. I won’t ruin it anymore except to say there is some fractal behavior going on.

Enjoy, or not. YMMV

And if not, you can always customize your own experience.
